How to develop black and white film.
Developing black and white film requires a few basic steps. Here's a general guide:
Gather your equipment: You'll need a darkroom or changing bag, a developing tank, a thermometer, film developer, stop bath, fixer, and a place to hang the film to dry.
Load the film into the developing tank: In complete darkness, open the film canister, remove the film, and load it into the developing tank. Make sure to follow the instructions for your specific tank.
Prepare the developer: Mix the developer according to the instructions on the bottle. Measure the temperature of the developer with a thermometer and adjust it if necessary.
Develop the film: Pour the developer into the developing tank and agitate it according to the instructions. The length of time you should develop the film will depend on the film and developer used, as well as the temperature of the developer.
Stop the development: Pour out the developer and add the stop bath. (A water rinse of a similar temp. can also be used if you don’t have stop bath) Agitate for a few seconds, then pour it out.
Fix the film: Add the fixer to the developing tank and agitate according to the instructions. The length of time will vary depending on the fixer used.
Rinse the film: Rinse the film with water for several minutes to remove any remaining chemicals.
Hang the film to dry: Hang the film up to dry in a dust-free area.
Once your film is dry, you can scan or print your images. Developing film can take practice, but with time and experimentation, you can achieve the results you want.
